Sulkhan Tamazashvili Reviews Batumi–Sarpi Bypass Project on Site
Sulkhan Tamazashvili, Chairman of the Government of Ajara, together with Paata Salia, Minister of Infrastructure of Georgia, and Levan Darakhvelidze, Head of the Roads Department of Georgia, reviewed the Batumi–Sarpi bypass project. They visited the planned route of the Batumi–Sarpi highway and inspected the project on site.
According to Sulkhan Tamazashvili, the project will contribute to the further development of Ajara and have a positive impact on the living conditions of the population.
The Batumi–Sarpi bypass road is co-financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the state budget. The project envisages the construction of an 11.3 km motorway, including an 8 km tunnel and a 1.47 km bridge over the Chorokhi River. Upon completion, travel time from Khelvachauri to Sarpi will be reduced to 25–30 minutes.
The new Batumi–Sarpi road is a key section of the East–West Highway, connecting to the Batumi bypass and linking Georgia’s border with the Republic of Turkey. The Roads Department of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Georgia announced an international tender for construction works in November.
The Mayor of Batumi, Giorgi Tsintsadze, and the Mayor of Khelvachauri Municipality also attended the site visit and reviewed the project.
