Sulkhan Tamazashvili Discusses Key Issues at the Government Session of Ajara

Sulkhan Tamazashvili addressed several key issues at a session of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Ajara.

The Chairman of the Government noted that infrastructural projects are actively underway across the region.

‘Infrastructural projects are progressing throughout the region. Last week, together with the Minister of Infrastructure of Georgia, we inspected completed and ongoing educational, sports, and road infrastructure projects in the municipalities of Batumi and Kobuleti. Batumi City Hall has also launched the implementation of an important project. By the end of 2026, a modern shelter for stray dogs, built in accordance with contemporary standards, will be completed,’ said Sulkhan Tamazashvili.

The Chairman also reviewed the citrus season, noting that it was completed without significant disruptions as a result of coordinated efforts.

Sulkhan Tamazashvili also highlighted road clearing works carried out in the mountainous areas of Ajara during periods of heavy rainfall and snowfall.

The Chairman further spoke about the positive dynamics at the Goderdzi resort, increased tourist flows, and the successful winter season. He also emphasized that special attention is being paid to the development of road infrastructure.

‘We are witnessing positive dynamics in terms of tourist flows and the development of hospitality infrastructure, including family-run hotels, which make a significant contribution to improving the socio-economic conditions of the local population,’ said Sulkhan Tamazashvili.

The Chairman also announced a new decision under which one-time financial assistance for individuals aged 100 and above will increase to 5,000 GEL starting from 2026.

In addition, the Chairman of the Government addressed one of the recent topical issues related to the ongoing protests near the buildings on Gogoli Street in Batumi. He noted that, in accordance with the decision of the Prime Minister of Georgia, the buildings will be fully designated for social purposes.

‘According to the decision of the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, the buildings located on Gogoli Street will be used exclusively for social, rather than commercial, purposes. A commission will review each application in accordance with established criteria. I urge citizens not to be influenced by speculations that have been circulating on this issue in recent days. The state will not allow anyone to unlawfully occupy the facility,’ said Sulkhan Tamazashvili.

According to Sulkhan Tamazashvili, there are approximately 2,000 eco-migrants in Ajara, some of whom receive rental assistance from the state. Around 6 million GEL is allocated annually from the budget for this purpose.

‘This will allow us to redirect these funds to other equally important areas, such as social and healthcare programmes,’ said Sulkhan Tamazashvili.
